Canberra's newest suburb, Whitlam, adds to the city’s rich tradition of naming areas after former Prime Ministers. Named in honour of Gough Whitlam, Australia’s 21st Prime Minister, this suburb not only commemorates an influential leader but also offers a promising community in the picturesque Molonglo Valley. The suburb’s development began on July 1, with a plan to build around 2100 new homes over the coming years, bringing a fresh, vibrant neighbourhood to Canberra.
A Thoughtfully Planned Community
Whitlam’s development will roll out in stages, with the ACT Government planning the release of 500 residential lots in 2018-19, another 600 in 2019-20, and an additional 500 in 2020-21. The suburb will initially feature single residential blocks, multi-unit complexes, and thoughtfully designed open spaces, providing plenty of options for prospective homeowners.
Plans for the community include a local public primary school, a shopping centre, and several green spaces for recreation. Notably, Whitlam will be a designated cat containment area, meaning pet cats must remain within household yards to help protect local wildlife and preserve the suburb’s natural environment.
Scenic Location and Access to Nature
Located in the Molonglo Valley, Whitlam is positioned to the north of Denman Prospect and is bordered by the beautiful Molonglo River on its southern side and Coppins Crossing Road to the east. The suburb is designed to provide residents with stunning scenic views, particularly from its northern edge, which borders The Pinnacle Nature Reserve—a 136-hectare park perfect for walking, cycling, dog walking, and even horse riding on specific trails.
The surrounding area is rich in Aboriginal heritage, with local Aboriginal organisations and Murumbung Rangers from ACT Parks and Conservation Service offering cultural activities that educate the community on heritage values, conservation practices, and the cultural significance of the land.
Nature-Integrated Living
Whitlam’s design emphasises connection to the surrounding natural landscape, offering a network of pedestrian pathways, local parks, and access to the Molonglo River’s future recreation spaces. With an emphasis on nature and outdoor living, Whitlam provides an ideal setting for those who value a balance between urban amenities and open green spaces.
