A Practical Room-by-Room Guide to Decluttering Your Home

Marie Kondo’s KonMari method has revolutionised decluttering with her structured approach, but for many, it can feel overwhelming. As real estate agents, we see first-hand the impact of cluttered spaces on potential buyers. Here’s a room-by-room guide with simple, manageable steps to help you transform your home into a tidy, inviting space.

Living Room

Oversized furniture is a common issue in living rooms. Swap large sofas or bulky TV units for lighter pieces that better suit the space. Consider selling or storing anything that makes the room feel cramped.

Kitchen

Clear those benchtops by boxing up recipe books and knick-knacks. Strip the fridge of magnets and kid’s drawings, and declutter the appliance cupboard. Anything used only once or twice can go to charity or be sold online.

Bathroom

Get rid of the hotel guest soaps you’ve collected and check through your vanity for expired or unused products. Toss out outdated medicines, makeup, sunscreen, and other items that haven’t been touched in over a year.

Bedroom

Sort through kids’ toys, discarding broken ones and storing favourites. Pick up anything on the floor, and go through your wardrobe one item at a time. Anything you haven’t worn in two years is likely not needed. Donate or sell items, and keep only what you love or plan to repair.

Laundry

Laundries can easily become catch-alls. Clear out old sporting equipment, outgrown shoes, and any cleaning products cluttering up surfaces. Organise cleaning products into a bucket and give the room a deep clean.

This straightforward approach can help transform your home without the overwhelm. A decluttered space is easier to maintain and makes your home more appealing to family, friends, and potential buyers.
